Here’s how you can take action to alleviate your symptoms while you wait for a psychotherapy appointment:
General recommendations for maintaining mental health:
- At least 30 minutes of daylight per day
- Regular sleep-wake rhythm
- Physical exercise and sport (in the case of pre-existing physical conditions, consult a doctor)
- Balanced diet (information and recommendations at www.dge.de)
- Personal exchange with confidants and maintenance of social contacts
Prevention courses offered by health insurance companies:
A wide range of programs to promote mental health, including stress management, relaxation, and mindfulness. The techniques taught there are not a substitute for psychotherapy, but they can provide a useful foundation and initial relief.
Digital Health Applications (DIGA):
Also known as „prescription apps.“ These are scientifically sound and tested digital offerings for the treatment of various mental health disorders, such as sleep disorders, anxiety disorders, and depression. A complete list of all currently approved DIGAs can be found at https://diga.bfarm.de/de.
Prescriptions can be obtained from general practitioners, specialist physicians, or psychotherapists, or they can be activated directly by health insurance companies if a corresponding diagnosis is already recorded there. Using a DIGA does not prevent participation in or initiation of psychotherapy and can also be used alongside psychotherapy.
Further information on finding a psychotherapy appointment:
Actively ask your health insurance provider whether they offer special programs to facilitate the search for a therapy appointment. Examples (only for some insurance providers):
- Minddoc (video therapy, https://minddoc.com/de/de/cost-overview)
- Quatemar study (https://www.quatemar.de/)
- Consider not only individual psychotherapy but also group psychotherapy or a combined treatment.
